Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 16: Karnataka Minister Santosh Lad on Wednesday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to resolving the land acquisition issues surrounding the proposed aerospace park near Bengaluru airport, after Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh urged aerospace industries to consider relocating the project to his state.
When questioned about Lokesh’s social media pitch, Lad responded, “You should ask why he tweeted now.” He further clarified that the project is not being scrapped and emphasized that land acquisition is voluntary, acknowledging the concerns of local farmers.
“The farmers had a strong opinion that this land should not be given to anyone else. We have asked them to voluntarily give their land. It doesn’t mean the project is scrapped. We will find a solution,” said Lad.
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara also acknowledged that Andhra Pradesh is promoting opportunities for the aerospace sector, hinting at growing regional competition for investment.
Nara Lokesh’s Direct Pitch to Aerospace Firms
Andhra Minister Nara Lokesh seized the moment after Karnataka withdrew from acquiring 1,777 acres of farmland in Devanahalli taluk for the aerospace project — a move widely viewed as a win for protesting farmers.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Lokesh wrote:
“Dear Aerospace industry, sorry to hear about this. I have a better idea for you. Why don’t you look at Andhra Pradesh instead? We have an attractive aerospace policy for you, with best-in-class incentives and over 8000 acres of ready-to-use land (just outside Bengaluru)! Hope to see you soon to talk across the table.”
Siddaramaiah Prioritizes Farmer Rights
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the government’s decision to withdraw the land acquisition process in Channarayapatna and other villages of Devanahalli taluk, stating:
“In keeping with our commitment to protect farmers’ interests and safeguard fertile agricultural land, the Government of Karnataka has decided to completely withdraw the land acquisition process.”
This decision follows sustained protests by farmers opposing the loss of agricultural land for industrial development near Kempegowda International Airport.
What’s at Stake?
The proposed aerospace park is a significant project tied to Karnataka’s ambitions in aviation and defence manufacturing. With Andhra Pradesh actively pursuing aerospace investments, Karnataka now faces increased pressure to strike a balance between industrial development and agricultural interests.
