Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India]: In an effort to promote the Kannada language, the Karnataka government has mandated that all industrial and consumer products manufactured in the state must display names and usage instructions prominently in Kannada, alongside other languages.
The directive was issued through a circular on February 15 and applies to both government and private sectors.
Government Push for Kannada Language Development
The circular emphasizes the cultural and economic significance of the local language.
“Language reflects the culture, tradition, and values of the land. For a language to develop, production, marketing, and business in that land must be in the local language. For the comprehensive development of the Kannada language and to provide better opportunities to Kannadigas in all spheres of life, the Government has implemented the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, in effect from March 12, 2024,” the circular stated.
As per Section 17 (7) of the Act, all industrial and consumer goods manufactured and sold within Karnataka must include Kannada labeling along with any other language.
Strict Enforcement to Ensure Compliance
The government has instructed enforcement authorities, designated under Section 9 of the Act, to monitor strict compliance with this directive across all industries.
“It is hereby directed to compulsorily print the names and instructions on their use in Kannada along with other languages on all industrial and consumer products manufactured in the government and private sector in the state,” the circular mentioned.
Deputy CM DK Shivakumar’s Vision for Kannada
The move aligns with the state government’s broader efforts to make Kannada a central part of daily life.
During the 69th Kannada Rajyotsava celebration in November 2024, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stressed the importance of Kannada in all aspects of life.
“Our aim is to make Kannada a language of life. All of us need to show our respect to our motherland by hoisting the flag of the land high,” he said at Kanteerava Stadium.
The Karnataka government’s latest directive aims to strengthen the role of Kannada in commerce and industry, ensuring its continued prominence in the state.
