The Delhi High Court was the scene of a dramatic courtroom confrontation on Wednesday as the legal battle over the estimated ₹30,000 crore estate of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur escalated. The lawsuit was filed by his children with Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Raj Kapur, who accuse their stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur, of forging and fabricating their father’s will.
The tension was palpable as senior advocates Mahesh Jethmalani, representing Karisma’s children, and Rajiv Nayar, representing Priya Sachdev, engaged in a heated exchange. A video of the incident, shared by Bar and Bench, showed the lawyers interrupting each other and raising their voices. “Please don’t interrupt me, I am not used to interruption,” Nayar was heard saying, to which Jethmalani shot back, “You should get a taste of your own medicine then, and don’t shout at me… I’m not a pushover.”
The court, presided over by Justice Jyoti Singh, has directed Priya Sachdev Kapur to submit a comprehensive list of all movable and immovable assets belonging to Sunjay Kapur as of the date of his death on June 12, 2025.
The case, however, has taken on additional layers of complexity. Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, has also joined the fray, claiming a share of his assets, which she estimates to be worth ₹10,000 crore. Her lawyer argued in court, “There is something incredibly unholy. ₹10,000 crore worth of assets should have been mine.” Rani Kapur has also alleged that she was not informed of any documents related to her late son’s will and was forced to sign papers behind closed doors while grieving.
Priya Sachdev’s counsel, on the other hand, has contended that the lawsuit is not maintainable, claiming that Samaira and Kiaan were given assets worth ₹1,900 crore just days before they filed the case. The counsel for Karisma’s children, however, has disputed this, stating that the children’s inheritance is not at the mercy of Priya Sachdev.
The lawsuit challenges a will dated March 21, 2025, which allegedly leaves Sunjay’s entire personal estate to Priya Sachdev, to the exclusion of his two biological children. Samaira and Kiaan contend that their father, who passed away from a heart attack, had often reassured them of their financial future and had even taken steps to secure assets and trusts for them. Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, has also publicly stated her support for Karisma’s children, questioning why her brother would leave them out of his will.
The Delhi High Court has scheduled the next hearing for October 9.
