The Supreme Court has granted actor Karisma Kapoor two weeks to file a detailed objection against a plea moved by Priya Sachdev Kapur. Priya is seeking access to the certified, confidential records of the 2016 divorce settlement between Karisma and the late Sunjay Kapur.
The Core of the Dispute
The legal friction stems from the sudden demise of Sunjay Kapur, Chairman of Sona Comstar, on June 12, 2025. Following his death, a bitter succession battle broke out in the Delhi High Court:
- The Will: Priya Kapur relies on a will dated March 21, 2025, which purportedly leaves Sunjay’s entire personal estate to her.
- The Challenge: Karisma’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, along with Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, have challenged the will’s authenticity, alleging it is forged and fabricated.
- The Divorce Records: Priya argues that the 2016 divorce documents are essential to prove that financial and succession issues were already settled during Sunjay’s lifetime, thereby validating her current claims to the estate.
Karisma’s Stand
Through her legal counsel, Karisma Kapoor has strongly opposed the move, describing it as an “intrusive” and “frivolous” attempt to dig into a sensitive matrimonial matter that reached finality a decade ago. Her team argued:
- The records contain highly personal information and confidential consent terms.
- Priya is a “third party” to the 2016 proceedings and has no locus standi to access them.
- Accessing these records is unnecessary as the relevant decree is already available to the parties involved in the High Court.
Family Perspectives
The Kapur family appears divided. While Priya asserts her rights as the legally wedded wife and direct heir, Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, has supported Karisma’s stance, calling the plea “unnecessary and misplaced,” especially considering the privacy of the children involved.
