Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: Even after nearly two decades, ‘Jab We Met’, the 2007 romantic drama starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shahid Kapoor, continues to capture the hearts of audiences across generations. Speaking at WAVES 2025, India’s premier international summit on the audio-visual and entertainment sector, Kareena opened up about the timeless appeal of the film and her aspirations for global projects.
During a panel moderated by filmmaker Karan Johar, Kareena was asked to name one Indian film she would want a global audience to watch. Without hesitation, she said, “Jab We Met.”
“I would say Jab We Met because somewhere it embodies the spirit of a young Indian girl, a young Punjabi girl. Every girl has that spark in her, that dream in her eyes. Also, the freedom to choose what she wanted — to feel love as she wanted. I think it connected with everyone for a reason, and I believe it will continue to connect with people worldwide,” Kareena shared.
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film tells the story of Aditya Kashyap (Shahid), a depressed tycoon who crosses paths with the vivacious Geet Dhillon (Kareena) during a spontaneous train journey. Their contrasting personalities — Geet’s unfiltered charm and Aditya’s stoic demeanor — brought alive the saying opposites attract, crafting one of Bollywood’s most iconic on-screen duos.
The film’s soundtrack, featuring hits like Ye Ishq Hai, Tum Se Hi, Aaoge Jab Tum, and Mauja Hi Mauja, remains a staple in Bollywood playlists and continues to garner admiration for its lyrical depth and musical richness.
Kareena also hinted at the prospect of venturing into Hollywood:
“I think it just organically did not happen. Films are my passion — they run in my veins. I was born into this family. Times are changing, and you never know. Chasing something has never been a part of my personality, but if it’s meant to happen, maybe a Hindi-English film will come along. After all, even Spielberg is watching our movies!”
