Surrey [Canada], July 20: Kapil Sharma’s Kap’s Cafe is set to reopen, over a week after a shocking firing incident took place at the café in Surrey. The news was shared by comedian Kapil Sharma himself on Instagram, where he expressed pride in his team, writing, “Proud of you Team,” while reposting an update from the café’s official Instagram handle.
The Shooting Incident
On July 10, around 1:50 am (local time), multiple gunshots were fired outside Kap’s Cafe, according to the Surrey Police Service. Several staff members were inside the restaurant at the time of the incident, but thankfully, no injuries were reported.
The café, which had only recently opened, was left with visible damage. At least 10 bullet holes were found in one of the windows, and another window pane was shattered. The building housing the café comprises ground-level retail units and residential apartments above, though the number of residents remains unspecified.
A multi-faith center and two other businesses (yet to open) share the ground-level space. The Newton neighbourhood was cordoned off by police tape as officers gathered evidence. A daycare across the street continued to operate, with children playing outside during the investigation, reported Vancouver Sun.
Cafe’s Heartfelt Message to the Community
The staff of Kap’s Cafe called the incident “heartbreaking” and admitted they were “shocked” by the unexpected violence. Following the incident, the café shared an emotional message on Instagram titled “A Message From Heart”.
“We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversation. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock, but we are not giving up,” the post read.
The statement further assured patrons that the café would continue to stand firm against violence:
“Thank you for your support. Your kind words, prayers, and memories shared via DM mean more than you know. This cafe exists because of your belief in what we’re building together. Let’s stand firm against violence and ensure Kap’s Cafe remains a place of warmth and community.”
Police Investigation
Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton, spokesperson for the Surrey Police Service, confirmed that the authorities are aware of Indian media reports suggesting that a Khalistani separatist has claimed responsibility for the shooting. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Kap’s Cafe has also expressed gratitude to the Surrey, British Columbia, police department for their assistance and to the local community for its unwavering support during this difficult time.
