New Delhi, India – July 24, 2025 – Renowned actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan is set to take his oath as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament in Delhi today, July 24, 2025. This marks a significant moment in his political career, as he assumes a national legislative role for the first time.
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Haasan stated, “I am going to take the oath and register my name in Delhi today. I am going to fulfil this duty with honour given to me as an Indian.”
Kamal Haasan’s election to the Upper House was made possible with the support of the ruling DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu. This nomination was part of an agreement where the DMK-led alliance promised him a Rajya Sabha seat in return for MNM’s support during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Haasan officially filed his nomination on June 6, 2025, at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat. The event was attended by key political figures, including Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, and prominent DMK allies such as VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, MDMK’s Vaiko, and Tamil Nadu Congress chief Selvaperunthagai.
In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, a candidate requires a minimum of 34 votes to secure a Rajya Sabha seat. With the DMK-led INDIA bloc commanding 158 MLAs (DMK-133, Congress-17, VCK-4, CPI-2, CPM-2), the alliance was comfortably positioned to win four seats in the recent elections.
Notably, MNM chose not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and instead extended its full support to the DMK-led alliance across Tamil Nadu. In the 2021 Assembly elections, MNM had secured a 2.62 percent vote share.
On June 12, 2025, Kamal Haasan, along with five other candidates, was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu. They received their election certificates from Returning Officer Subramani at the Chennai Secretariat. The other five elected members include DMK’s Poet Salma (A Rokkaiah Malik), SR Sivalingam, and P Wilson (entering his second term), as well as AIADMK’s IS Inbadurai and Dhanapal. Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and other MPs were present during the certificate distribution ceremony.
