New Delhi [India], January 13: Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin, who welcomed her daughter Sappho with partner Guy Hershberg, shared her personal journey through the early months of pregnancy and motherhood. Reflecting on the challenges she faced, Kalki highlighted the physical and emotional toll that pregnancy and postpartum recovery had on her, which is often not openly discussed.
The actress, known for her role in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, expressed, “Pregnancy, delivering a baby, and then the postpartum period—it takes so much out of you. Your body becomes like a slave to another person. You are literally an incubation system for the baby, and the baby takes all your nutrients and energy.”
She continued, “Even the first six months were incredibly tough. You’re up all night feeding the baby, losing sleep, and your nutrition is disrupted because everything is going to the baby. You start wondering, ‘Where is my life? Who am I?’ I felt really lost. It’s a tough phase that people don’t talk about enough.”
Kalki, who gave birth to Sappho in 2020, has since developed a close bond with her now five-year-old daughter. “My daughter has become so chatty, we share secrets now. I even tell her my problems, and it feels like I’ve found a new friend. She understands me and gives me the space to work,” Kalki shared.
Kalki is widely recognized for her role as Aditi in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), which was recently re-released to great fanfare among fans. She fondly recalled some behind-the-scenes moments from the movie, revealing, “Deepika and I would play pranks on Ranbir and Aditya while filming in Gulmarg. We’d sneak snow into their t-shirts. But they got their revenge at the Haldi ceremony in Udaipur, where they were supposed to just put a dot of Haldi on me— instead, they poured it all over me!”
Looking ahead, Kalki is set to make her Tamil debut with the film Nesippaya, where she plays the role of a lawyer. Directed by Vishnuvardhan, the film features music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
