Kajol Reflects On Motherhood, Fear, And Strength Ahead Of Mythological Horror Debut ‘Maa’

New Delhi [India], June 25: As she prepares for the release of her upcoming mythological horror film Maa, actress Kajol opened up about the real-life fears that come with motherhood—fears far more personal and enduring than any supernatural threat.

Kajol discussed the emotional core of parenting, especially as her children grow older and increasingly independent.

“My children are much older now. I have taught them a lot of skills. So now I will have to trust my upbringing. Look, I have taught you for so long, now it’s time for you to learn your lesson and to practise it,” Kajol said, explaining her approach to balancing protection with independence.

This philosophy reflects the spirit of her character in Maa, a mother battling ancient forces to save her daughter.

She emphasized the importance of listening in parenting:

“Sometimes just listening to them makes them also see your point of view and makes you also see their point of view. So, I guess listening is the most powerful parenting tool.”

Describing the most vulnerable phase of motherhood, Kajol poignantly shared:

“The first day that the child is born in this world is the first day that the mother is born in the world as well.”

She recalled the early months of motherhood as the most challenging, marked by pressure and emotional intensity.

“There’s a pressure on a mother that… no one can question me whether I am a good mother or not. You have to do superhuman things like not sleeping for six months and still have a happy face.”

Kajol’s upcoming film Maa, directed by Vishal Furia and produced by Ajay Devgn and Jio Studios, merges mythology and horror through the lens of a mother-daughter bond. The story follows a road trip gone awry after the pair encounter a cursed tree haunted by ancient spirits.

The film also stars Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, Yaaneea Bharadwaj, and Surjyasikha Das, and is expected to offer a visually rich, emotionally resonant take on horror and legacy.

Maa releases in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali on June 27, 2025.
