Mohammad Kaif, a former Indian cricketer, has said he is worried about Shubman Gill being made captain of the ODI team too soon. He says the young star may be too busy with a full international schedule.
Gill was named India’s new ODI captain, taking over for veteran Rohit Sharma, just before the three-match series against Australia. Gill is also the captain of India’s Test team and the vice-captain of the T20I team.
I thought this would happen after the 2027 World Cup, but it was predicted. The guy is good, and he’s also been working on his fitness. He had a good possibility of being able to play in the World Cup in 2027. But Gill has to do the work. He is quickly getting all of it. It could also mean losing something. Kaif remarked in a YouTube video, “When you get so much in such a short time, it could backfire.”
Kaif also said that Gill had been pushed into taking on the leadership role, noting that the young player doesn’t often desire to be captain.
“Don’t give him too much to do,” I said. He is the captain of the Tests and bats at number four. He was named vice-captain of the Asia Cup and will take over when Suryakumar Yadav steps down. You just made him the ODI skipper. I think everything is being done too quickly. A player never asks to be captain… Ajit Agarkar and the other selectors have put pressure on him.
Rohit Sharma is still in the team for the Australia ODIs, but he won’t have to lead the team anymore.
Ajit Agarkar, the top selector for the BCCI, said that giving Gill the ODI captaincy is a way to get ready for the 2027 World Cup by allowing him time to get used to the job.
