BRS MLC K Kavitha Demands Caste Census, 42% OBC Reservation; Congress Criticizes

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India]: Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) MLC K Kavitha intensified her demands on Friday for a caste census and 42% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in local bodies, calling for immediate action from the central and Telangana state governments.

Speaking to media, Kavitha stated that the fight for these demands would continue until they are met.
“We are demanding that the central government conduct a caste census as part of the 2025 general census. Additionally, the state Congress government must implement 42% reservation for OBCs in local bodies. Thousands of people from backward classes have gathered here to support these demands, and we will not stop until justice is served,” Kavitha said.

Telangana Minister for Transport and Backward Class Welfare, Ponnam Prabhakar, responded critically to Kavitha’s demands.
“If she genuinely wants to work for BCs, she should start by ensuring their representation within her own party. The BRS has been in power for years but failed to appoint a Deputy Chief Minister from the backward classes. During elections, they suddenly remember the BCs. True advocacy should begin with granting them rights within the party,” Prabhakar remarked.

BRS Leadership Calls for Intensified Struggle
On Thursday, BRS Working President K T Rama Rao (KTR) urged party cadres to strengthen their opposition to the Congress government in Telangana, accusing it of corruption and misgovernance.

In a New Year message, KTR praised party workers for their year-long efforts to expose the Congress regime’s failures. He pledged to continue fighting until justice for the people of Telangana is achieved.
“The Congress regime’s policies are rooted in deception. Despite wrongful cases and oppression, our party workers have stood firm, demonstrating extraordinary resolve,” KTR stated.

KTR emphasized the importance of unity and coordination within the BRS to counter what he termed Congress’ “divisive politics.” Reiterating the party’s slogan, “Telangana First,” he called on cadres to resist and expose the alleged betrayals of the Congress government.
