Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], April 4: Juna Akhara’s Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avdheshanand Giri Maharaj has extended his support for the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025, calling it a long-overdue reform that has been widely welcomed across the nation.
“No More Land Encroachments”
Swami Avdheshanand emphasized that the bill ensures that land encroachments will no longer be tolerated, affirming that India belongs to historical and spiritual figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji, Guru Gobind Singh, and Tirthankars, not invaders.
“It was needed for a long time, and even members of the Muslim community had been demanding it. Many people, who had no means, found their lands encroached upon with no option but to appeal to the Waqf board. The entire country is welcoming this change, including many Muslim clerics who are my friends,” he told.
Swami Avdheshanand also remarked that opposition to the bill may stem from political motives, saying,
“Some are opposing it to strengthen their political standing. However, I believe many more reforms are needed, and I welcome this one wholeheartedly.”
PM Modi Hails the Bill as a ‘Watershed Moment’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also celebrated the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, calling it a landmark decision that empowers marginalised communities who have long been denied both voice and opportunity.
Opposition Criticizes the Bill
Meanwhile, Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Ranjeet Ranjan strongly opposed the bill.
Kharge criticized the government’s approach, stating,
“We presented our views on the bill, but the government took a negative stand and is pushing it forward.”
Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan echoed similar sentiments, calling the bill’s passage “unfortunate.”
Bill Passed After Heated Debate in Parliament
The Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 was passed in both houses of Parliament after an intense debate.
