Washington [US], February 4: French actress Juliette Binoche has been appointed as the President of the International Jury for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Binoche takes over from Greta Gerwig, the director of Barbie, and will be responsible for leading the jury that will select the winner of the coveted Palme d’Or. In a statement about her new role, Binoche reflected on the honor, stating, “In 1985, I walked up the steps for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress; I never imagined I’d return 40 years later in the honorary role of President of the Jury. I appreciate the privilege, the responsibility, and the absolute need for humility.”
Binoche first made her debut at Cannes in 1985, with the premiere of André Téchiné’s film Rendez-vous, a role that helped launch her career. Since then, she has become a regular presence at the festival, starring in films by renowned directors such as Michael Haneke, David Cronenberg, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Olivier Assayas, Claire Denis, and Anh Hung Tran.
In 2010, Binoche won the Best Actress award at Cannes for her role in Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy. She is the only actress to have won Best Actress at all three major European film festivals—Cannes, Venice (1994 for Three Colors: Blue), and Berlin (1997 for The English Patient). Her role in The English Patient also earned her an Oscar and BAFTA.
Binoche has also recently portrayed Coco Chanel in Apple TV+‘s The New Look and reunited with Ralph Fiennes for The Return, a new adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. She was named President of the European Film Academy last year.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival is set to take place from May 13 to May 24, 2025, marking another significant milestone in Binoche’s illustrious career.
