New Delhi [India]: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) reviewing the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill is set to convene today at 3 PM. The meeting will feature presentations from Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani and Justice DN Patel, former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and current Chairperson of the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT).

Key Discussions in Today’s Meeting

  • The JPC will first interact with Justice DN Patel, followed by discussions with Attorney General R. Venkataramani.
  • The next committee sitting is scheduled for April 2, where the panel will engage with:
    • Justice Hemant Gupta, former Supreme Court judge
    • Justice BS Chauhan, former Supreme Court judge and Chairman of the 21st Law Commission of India

These deliberations are part of the committee’s broader examination of two bills proposing major constitutional and legal reforms for simultaneous elections across the country.

Insights from the Previous JPC Meeting

The last JPC meeting was held on March 18, where former Solicitor General of India Harish Salve and former Law Commission Chairman Ajit Prakash Shah participated.

BJP MP and JPC Chairperson PP Chaudhary stated:

“The meeting lasted for five hours, with members engaging in detailed discussions with Harish Salve for three hours and Ajit Prakash Shah for nearly two hours. It was a very positive and insightful session.”

Committee members sought clarifications on legal and logistical concerns, as the panel aims to build consensus on implementing ‘One Nation, One Election’ in India.

Launch of ONOE Website

PP Chaudhary also revealed that a dedicated portal for ‘One Nation, One Election’ will be launched soon, where stakeholders and the public can share opinions on specific clauses of the proposed reforms.

“We are committed to bringing ‘One Nation, One Election’ for the benefit of the country. The doubts of the members are being addressed through discussions with experts. After some final adjustments, the website will go live,” he added.
