New Delhi [India], March 25: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the One Nation, One Election bill is holding a crucial meeting in New Delhi. PP Chaudhary, Chairman of the JPC, informed that both Attorney General of India, R Venkataramani, and former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice DN Patel, will participate in the discussions and engage with committee members.
“Former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court DN Patel will come, and members will interact with him. After that, there will be an interaction with Attorney General of India, R Venkataramani,” Chaudhary said.
Regarding the extension of time for submitting the report, Chaudhary stated that members agreed that adequate time should be allocated to hold consultations with all relevant stakeholders. “All members believed that all stakeholders should be given an effective opportunity to present their views. After listening to everyone, we should submit the report in a transparent manner. That is why time should be sought, and Parliament extended the time,” he added.
On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha approved a motion to extend the JPC’s tenure for the One Nation, One Election report submission until the first day of the last week of the Monsoon Session in 2025. PP Chaudhary moved the motion regarding the extension of time for presenting the report on the One Nation, One Election Bills – the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The last JPC meeting was held on March 18, where former Solicitor General of India, Harish Salve, also participated.
The bills currently under review aim to align the election cycles of the Lok Sabha and state assemblies under the One Nation, One Election initiative.
