Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), July 9, 2025 : Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President JP Nadda visited the rain-affected Baga village in Mandi district on Wednesday to assess the devastation caused by recent cloudbursts and heavy monsoon rains. He was accompanied by former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur.
According to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), the ongoing monsoon since June 20 has claimed 85 lives across the state. Out of these, 54 people died due to rain-related calamities such as landslides, cloudbursts, flash floods, and drowning, while 31 fatalities occurred in road accidents.
The SDMA’s cumulative report revealed that the state has suffered severe damage to life, property, livestock, and infrastructure. The total estimated financial loss from the monsoon destruction stands at over ₹718 crore.
As per the latest figures, 129 people have sustained injuries, and 340 homes have been completely destroyed. Additionally, over 10,255 animals and poultry have died due to the extreme weather conditions.
Mandi district has been the worst affected, reporting 17 rain-related deaths, the destruction of 247 homes, 149 cowsheds, and the loss of 225 livestock animals.
The SDMA’s evening update on Tuesday stated that 198 roads are currently blocked, 159 electricity distribution transformers (DTRs) are non-functional, and 297 water supply schemes are disrupted. Authorities have deployed teams and equipment for restoration, but the damage remains extensive.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, during his visit to affected areas in Shimla including Dhalli and Bhatta Kufar, emphasized that rural areas are under tremendous pressure. He assured that compensation and infrastructure rebuilding proposals will be discussed in the upcoming state Cabinet meeting.
“We are making every possible effort to support affected families and ensure the quick restoration of essential services,” the Chief Minister stated.
The state government has issued a high alert as the monsoon continues to intensify across the hill state.
