New Delhi [India], March 10 : Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha and BJP National President JP Nadda on Monday criticized the opposition after they staged a walkout from the House over the issues of delimitation and the New Education Policy (NEP). Nadda accused the opposition of undermining the institution of Parliament with their actions and suggested a “refresher course” for opposition leaders to better understand the rules of parliamentary procedure.
Addressing the House, Nadda remarked, “For the past few days, I have been noticing that under Rule 267, members are giving notices early in the morning. This practice, by the opposition, is a malicious attempt to damage the institution by undermining Parliament. It’s a vicious design to demean the institution of the Parliament. They are not interested in debate; they want to give the impression that the government does not want to answer or engage in a discussion.”
He further emphasized that the government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is ready to discuss any issue in Parliament but stressed that certain rules and regulations must be followed for a debate to proceed.
“There will be discussions on the budget for the next 10 days, and everyone will get an opportunity to speak. But first, the opposition should learn to read the laws. This irresponsible behavior is unacceptable. I would suggest that including the Leader of Opposition, they undergo a refresher course to understand the rules and regulations,” Nadda said.
The controversy began after the DMK launched an attack on the government over the implementation of the National Education Policy in Tamil Nadu, while also protesting the refusal to discuss fair delimitation in the state.
In Lok Sabha, MPs walked into the well of the House during Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s address, accusing the DMK of engaging in “dishonest” politics at the expense of Tamil Nadu students’ futures.
DMK MP P Wilson stated that the party walked out of the Rajya Sabha after the Deputy Chairman refused to allow a discussion on fair delimitation for Tamil Nadu. He shared a post on X, stating, “The DMK floor leader Tiruchi Siva and I submitted a notice under Rule 267 to discuss fair delimitation for Tamil Nadu. This is critical, as the state has seen minimal population growth due to family planning policies. There is growing concern about the impending delimitation changes set to take effect in 2026.”
DMK MP Tiruchi Siva added that their concerns regarding the delimitation exercise are legitimate, citing fears that Tamil Nadu and other southern states may lose parliamentary seats if the exercise is based solely on population. “If it is done based on population, Tamil Nadu and other states will lose many seats. Tamil Nadu could go from 39 to 31, Kerala from 20 to 12, while other states could gain 30-40 more seats. This will lead to unfair representation in Parliament,” Siva explained.
