Washington DC [US], June 27: Director Joseph Kosinski is already dreaming big for a potential sequel to his newly released Brad Pitt-starrer F1 — and it includes bringing in none other than Tom Cruise for a high-octane crossover with Days of Thunder, according to Variety.
Speaking to GQ Magazine UK, Kosinski shared his vision of uniting Pitt and Cruise on screen once again, referencing Cruise’s iconic racer character Cole Trickle from the 1990 film Days of Thunder, directed by Tony Scott.
“Right now, it’d be Cole Trickle… and we find out that he and Brad Pitt’s Sonny Hayes have a past — maybe they were rivals, maybe they crossed paths. I heard about this epic go-kart battle on Interview With the Vampire that Brad and Tom had. Who wouldn’t pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?” Kosinski said.
Kosinski, who previously directed Cruise in the box office juggernaut Top Gun: Maverick (which grossed $1.4 billion globally), is also collaborating with him on the upcoming Top Gun 3.
The director had once planned a different racing film — his own version of Ford v Ferrari — with Pitt and Cruise in the lead, doing their own stunts. However, the project fell through due to budget issues, and the film was eventually directed by James Mangold and starred Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
Pitt and Cruise last appeared together in 1994’s Interview With the Vampire but have remained on good terms over the years. Cruise even made an appearance at the London premiere of F1, where he posed with Pitt on the red carpet.
In a light-hearted recent interview, Pitt commented on working with Cruise again: “I’m not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and shit like that.”
Kosinski’s F1 hit theatres on June 27, revving up hopes for a star-powered sequel that could bring two Hollywood icons back together on the racetrack.
