Jon Hamm On Playing Villains: “Bad Behaviour Can Be Extremely Attractive”

Washington, DC [US], June 18: Actor Jon Hamm, known for his roles in Mad Men, Fargo, and Baby Driver, recently opened up about his attraction to playing morally complex characters and making “bad behaviour look extremely attractive” on screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I think people can relate to characters making bad decisions, because we’ve all made them,” Hamm said, explaining why he often gravitates toward roles with darker edges.

“My history of characters isn’t exactly the saints; it’s more on the sinner side of the equation,” he added. Reflecting on the often one-dimensional appeal of flawless heroes, Hamm quipped, “Superman can be kind of boring. No offense to the new Superman [David Corenswet], who I hope is a delightful person.”

Over the years, Hamm has delivered some of his most compelling performances as antagonists, such as Sheriff Roy Tillman in Fargo Season 5, the dangerous Buddy in Baby Driver, and tech mogul Paul Marks in The Morning Show.

He also revisited his Mad Men character Don Draper, calling him more of a villain than many fans recognized. “The character got celebrated for the wrong reasons. People thought Don was this paragon of masculinity or whatever… but he was pretty messed up,” Hamm noted. He likened the role’s complexity to other iconic anti-heroes like Tony Soprano and Walter White, played by James Gandolfini and Bryan Cranston, respectively.

Hamm expressed satisfaction with how Mad Men creator Matt Weiner concluded Don Draper’s arc, even though portraying such a flawed character was a challenging experience.
