Fuji [Japan]: The 6th edition of the India-Japan joint military exercise, Dharma Guardian, concluded successfully at the East Fuji Training Area in Japan, according to a statement by the Indian Army. Held from February 24 to March 9, the exercise marked a significant step forward in bilateral defence cooperation, featuring company-strength troop participation on an enhanced scale.
The closing ceremony was attended by Lieutenant General Toriumi Seiji, Commanding General of the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) 1st Division. General Toriumi praised the participating troops for achieving all objectives and expressed satisfaction with the joint training. He highlighted the exercise’s role in enhancing operational readiness and deepening the India-Japan defence relationship.
The primary focus of Dharma Guardian was counter-terrorism operations in urban terrain, a crucial area of collaboration between the two nations. Additionally, the exercise included United Nations peacekeeping operations and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) drills. Troops from both sides participated in a series of tactical drills, sharing knowledge and expertise on operational conduct, which helped forge lasting ties of friendship and trust.
A key highlight was the cultural exchange activities between the troops. The Indian contingent organized a special Yoga session for the Japanese side, showcased Kalari Pattu (an ancient Indian martial art), while the Japanese troops demonstrated their own martial arts techniques.
The exercise concluded with a 72-hour validation phase, during which troops conducted a simulated joint counter-terrorism operation in an urban setting. This phase included specialised techniques such as heli-borne insertion, slithering, and storming, all executed to the desired operational standards.
Dharma Guardian offered a unique opportunity for both sides to learn from each other’s best practices for joint operations. It also reaffirmed the shared commitment of India and Japan to regional peace, security, and stability, further strengthening their longstanding partnership, the statement added.
