Joe Biden, the former president of the United States, recently had Mohs surgery to remove malignant skin lesions off his forehead. His spokeswoman confirmed the procedure after Biden was pictured exiting a Delaware church with a noticeable scar on his head over the Labor Day weekend.
The Mohs Operation
The operation, which is recognized for being exceedingly accurate, involves taking off very thin layers of skin one at a time. Each layer is looked at right away under a microscope until all the harmful cells are gone. This makes sure that all of the cancer is gone and as much good tissue as possible is left behind. The operation is the best way to treat common skin tumors like basal cell carcinoma, which Biden had before. It has a high success rate.
Biden has dealt with skin cancer before; in February 2023, he had a basal cell carcinoma removed off his chest. The procedure is the most recent health problem the former president has had. In May 2025, Biden’s office said that he had been diagnosed with a very severe form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. This is a devastating diagnosis, but the cancer is said to be hormone-sensitive, which means that existing treatment choices can work well to control it.
