A tragic incident of a woman and her daughter dying by suicide in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur has come to light amidst the national outrage over the Nikki Bhati dowry murder case in Greater Noida. A school lecturer, Sanju Bishnoi, reportedly set herself and her three-year-old daughter on fire, leading to the death of both.
The Incident and Accusations
According to police, the incident took place in the village of Sarnada Ki Dhani on Friday. The 32-year-old lecturer returned from school, locked herself and her daughter inside the house, poured petrol on them, and set them ablaze. The daughter died at the scene, while Sanju Bishnoi succumbed to her injuries the following day at the hospital.
Police have recovered a suicide note in which the woman accused her husband, Dilip, and her in-laws of dowry harassment. She also named another man, Ganpat Singh, alleging that he and her husband physically harassed her together.
Police Investigation and Family’s Complaint
Sanju Bishnoi’s father, Omaram Bishnoi, has filed a case against the in-laws, accusing them of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Police and forensic teams have collected evidence from the house, and the investigation is being handled by an Assistant Commissioner of Police. The victim’s mobile phone has also been seized as part of the inquiry.
The tragic incident highlights the persistent issue of dowry harassment in India, a practice that was outlawed decades ago but continues to lead to violence and death. The case has gained further significance as it follows closely on the heels of the highly publicized Nikki Bhati murder, also a dowry-related crime.
