Washington DC [US]: The state funeral for former US President Jimmy Carter will take place on January 9 in Washington, DC, according to CNN.
A White House official confirmed that President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy during the service. The ceremonies will be conducted by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region of the Department of Defense. Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100, will be honored with January 9 designated as a National Day of Mourning by President Biden.
In a statement, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden mourned Carter’s passing, lauding him as an exceptional leader and humanitarian. They noted, “With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe.”
Global leaders also paid tribute to Carter’s legacy. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over his passing, describing him as a “statesman of great vision.” PM Modi stated on X, “Deeply saddened by the passing of former USA President Mr Jimmy Carter. A statesman of great vision, he worked tirelessly for global peace and harmony. His contributions to fostering strong India-US ties leave a lasting legacy. Carter’s 1978 visit to India, during his presidency, was a significant moment in strengthening India-US relations. During the trip, he met then-President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and Prime Minister Morarji Desai, and addressed the Indian Parliament.
Carter passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, as confirmed by his son, James E. Carter III, according to The Washington Post. The Carter Center had announced in February 2023 that Carter chose to forgo further medical treatment and spend his remaining time under hospice care at home.
