Two individuals were arrested on Tuesday in Jharkhand’s Godda district for their alleged involvement in a violent clash with police during Hul Diwas celebrations in Bhognadih, Sahebganj district. The incident took place on June 30, when tensions erupted between protesting villagers and law enforcement, resulting in injuries on both sides.
🔴 Clash During Hul Diwas
Hul Diwas commemorates the Santhal rebellion of 1855, led by tribal heroes Sido and Kanhu Murmu against British colonial rule and oppressive landlords. The unrest began when villagers protested the dismantling of a stage by the district administration ahead of an official function.
As the protest turned aggressive, some villagers allegedly used bows and arrows to attack the police, prompting the use of tear gas shells and a mild lathi-charge by law enforcement personnel.
👥 Who Are the Arrested Individuals?
According to Godda Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar, the two arrested men are:
- Sudhir Kumar from Jamshedpur
- Ganesh Mandal from Odisha
The SP revealed that both were moving around the Borio, Barhait, and Sahebganj areas since June 20, allegedly distributing sarees, dhotis, and cash to villagers to incite unrest on Hul Diwas.
🔍 Possible Political Link
One of the accused is believed to be associated with a senior leader of a political party in Jharkhand.
“We are verifying his political connections,” said SP Mukesh Kumar.
The police have also recovered illegal arms and other materials from their possession. An FIR has been lodged in Sahebganj, and further investigation is underway.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over politicisation of tribal events, especially those with deep historical and cultural significance like Hul Diwas, and the potential for outside elements to exploit these platforms for unrest.
