Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh) — What began as a land dispute within a rural family has unravelled into a chilling story of multiple live-in relationships, deception, and murder. A 29-year-old woman, Pooja, stands at the centre of a sensational case that saw her mother-in-law Sushila Devi (54) brutally murdered and robbed of ₹8 lakh worth of gold jewellery.
The Crime and the Cover-Up
The incident took place in Kumhariya village, Jhansi, on June 24, when Sushila Devi was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her ransacked home. Initial investigation suggested robbery, with missing jewellery, a motorbike, and a country-made pistol.
However, suspicions deepened when police noticed the sudden disappearance of Sushila’s daughter-in-law, Pooja. Within 48 hours, the Uttar Pradesh Police had cracked the case and arrested Pooja, her sister Kamla, and Kamla’s lover Anil Verma—who was caught trying to sell the stolen ornaments.
Plot Rooted in Land Dispute and a Live-In Affair
Investigations revealed that Pooja was in a live-in relationship with her brother-in-law, Kalyan Singh, after the death of her husband. While most family members agreed to divide the family land, Sushila Devi opposed the idea of selling the ancestral property.
Driven by resentment and greed, Pooja hatched a murder plan with the help of Kamla and Anil. After killing Sushila, they fled with the gold ornaments worth ₹8 lakh. The trio thought the murder would be dismissed as a robbery, but swift police action led to their arrests.
A Tangled Web of Betrayal
“Pooja confessed to planning the murder to eliminate Sushila Devi and gain control over the land,” said a senior officer involved in the investigation.
“The motive was both revenge and greed, as she wanted her share of the property and the jewellery.”
The case has shocked the local community, not just for its brutality but for the complex web of relationships and betrayal behind the act. The UP Police have registered charges of murder, conspiracy, and theft, and all three accused remain in custody.
As investigations continue, the case stands as a grim reminder of how personal grudges, unchecked ambition, and fractured family ties can spiral into violence.
