Lynne Ramsay’s haunting new drama Die, My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, earned a rousing six-minute standing ovation following its world premiere at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, reported Variety.
The film marks a high-stakes return to the director’s chair for Scottish auteur Lynne Ramsay, whose emotionally intense style was on full display in this adaptation of Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel. Competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or, the film stunned audiences with its raw depiction of postpartum psychosis and unraveling domestic life.
Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence stars as the unnamed mother, whose descent into mental illness following childbirth destabilizes her life and marriage. Robert Pattinson plays her increasingly helpless husband, caught in the emotional crossfire. The supporting cast includes LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek, and Nick Nolte.
After the screening, the audience broke into extended applause, rising to their feet. A visibly emotional Ramsay took the mic during the ovation and said:
“Wow. I’m so overwhelmed. Thanks to these amazing actors. I’ve got to get it together, I’ll see you in a minute.”
This marks Ramsay’s fifth film to premiere at Cannes, cementing her as a festival mainstay. Her last feature, You Were Never Really Here (2017), won Best Screenplay and Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix). Die, My Love is her first directorial effort in eight years, and based on the premiere buzz, it was well worth the wait.
Despite not yet having a U.S. distributor, the film is expected to become a major acquisition title out of Cannes, riding on critical acclaim, star power, and timely themes of mental health and motherhood.
With powerhouse performances and Ramsay’s signature visceral storytelling, Die, My Love has instantly emerged as one of the strongest contenders at Cannes 2025.
