Abu Dhabi, UAE [December1]: Jay Shah, the former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, officially began his tenure as the new International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman on Sunday.
In an ICC statement, it was announced that December 1 marked the start of Shah’s leadership as ICC Chair. Shah expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, outlining his priorities for his term, including harnessing cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and accelerating the growth of women’s cricket.
“I am honored to take on the role of ICC Chair and thankful for the trust and support of the ICC Directors and Member Boards,” Shah said. “This is an exciting time for cricket, especially with the upcoming LA28 Olympic Games, as we aim to make the sport more inclusive and appealing to fans globally.”
Shah emphasized the need to promote cricket’s multiple formats and foster the growth of women’s cricket. “Cricket has immense global potential, and I am excited to work with the ICC team and Member countries to seize these opportunities and elevate the sport,” he added.
With extensive experience in cricket administration, Shah began his journey in 2009 with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), where he was instrumental in developing the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. In 2019, Shah became the youngest-ever honorary Secretary of the BCCI.
Shah succeeds Greg Barclay, who held the role since November 2020. Shah thanked Barclay for his leadership and the progress made during his tenure. “I would like to extend my gratitude to Greg Barclay for his leadership over the past four years and the milestones achieved under his guidance. I look forward to collaborating with the ICC team and Member countries to further expand and evolve the game globally,” Shah said.
Shah was elected unopposed as the ICC Chairman in August 2024 after Barclay chose not to seek a third term.
