Javed Akhtar Urges Strong Action Against Pakistan Over Pahalgam Terror Attack at Maharashtra Festival

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: Renowned lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar made a powerful appeal to the central government to take firm action against Pakistan in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives.

Speaking at the ‘Glorious Maharashtra Festival’ held on Maharashtra Foundation Day, Akhtar called on the Indian government to take “solid steps” against terrorism, stating that symbolic retaliations were no longer enough. “A few crackers on the border will not work. Take a solid step now,” he urged.

Akhtar strongly criticized the Pakistani Army Chief, referring to his divisive remarks and calling for a “befitting reply.” “He says Hindus and Muslims are different communities. Does he not care that there are Hindus in his own country?” Akhtar questioned.

Remembering the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, Akhtar paid tribute to the three tourists from Mumbai — Sanjay Lele, Atul Mone, and Hemant Joshi — who lost their lives. “They were looking for a moment of peace and happiness… They were mercilessly shot. We should not forget this,” he said.

Recounting his experience during a literary visit to Pakistan, Akhtar recalled telling a Pakistani audience that the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks were not outsiders, but from their own country. “They were not from Sweden or Egypt. They are still roaming free in your cities,” he said.

Akhtar also emphasized that India has always pursued peace, regardless of which political party is in power. “Be it the Congress or the BJP, India has tried to have good relations with its neighbours. But what has Mumbai or this country done to deserve this?” he asked.

His comments come amid heightened tensions following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, and reflect growing calls within India for a tougher stance on cross-border terrorism.
