Mumbai: Veteran lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has reacted to singer Lucky Ali’s criticism over his alleged remarks about Hindu–Muslim dynamics, which recently resurfaced online. In an interview, Akhtar responded to the singer’s sharp comments, saying he appreciates that Ali has opinions, even if they differ from his own.
In October, Lucky Ali had criticised Javed Akhtar after coming across an old video clip where the lyricist allegedly made comments about Hindu–Muslim relations. Reacting to the video, the singer posted on social media, “Don’t become like Javed Akhtar, never original and ugly as f**k.”
Later, Ali issued a sarcastic apology, clarifying his earlier post:
“What I meant was that arrogance is ugly… it was a mistaken communiqué on my part… monsters may have feelings too and I apologise if I hurt anyone’s monstrosity.”
When asked about Ali’s remarks, Javed Akhtar responded with composure and humour.
“Now, I must take Lucky Ali’s opinion with a pinch of salt. I should accept it. Although I don’t agree with it. But anyway, I’m happy to know that he has opinions. That’s wonderful,” Akhtar said.
He further added that tolerance is essential, especially when it comes to sensitive subjects such as religion.
“If you are tolerant, it’s good. If you are intolerant in certain matters, particularly those which are sensitive, like religious matters, then it’s not good,” Akhtar said. “If you want your opinion to be heard, then you should be able to accept others’ opinions too, even if you don’t agree with them.”
The controversy began when Lucky Ali reacted to a tweet quoting Akhtar allegedly saying:
“Don’t become like Muslims. Make them like you. Don’t become like Muslims. It’s a tragedy.”
The post also referenced an old incident where the West Bengal Urdu Academy withdrew an invitation to Akhtar. This prompted Lucky Ali’s reaction on social media, which soon went viral.
Meanwhile, on the professional front, Javed Akhtar continues to stay active in the film industry. The acclaimed lyricist recently penned songs for the 2024 film Yudhra, with tracks like Hatt Jaa Baju and Saathiya becoming instant hits.
He has also written lyrics for Sunny Deol’s upcoming period drama Lahore 1947, which features Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, and Ali Fazal in key roles. The film is slated for a theatrical release in 2025.
