Team India suffered a major setback ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, as ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out due to a lower back injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development, naming young pacer Harshit Rana as his replacement.
BCCI’s Official Statement
“Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement.”
Bumrah, who has been out of action since January, last played in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Sydney. After bowling 10.1 overs in the first innings, he experienced discomfort and was advised against continuing by Australian doctors.
Jaiswal Dropped, Chakaravarthy Included
Another big change in India’s 15-member squad is the exclusion of young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been replaced by mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy.
“Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal who was initially named in the provisional squad,” stated BCCI.
Jaiswal’s omission follows his underwhelming ODI debut against England, where he managed just 15 runs off 22 balls in the series opener. He was dropped for the second ODI in favor of Virat Kohli, while Chakaravarthy, on his debut, picked up 1/54 in his 10-over spell.
