Jason Momoa Set To Play Lobo In ‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’

Washington [US], December 31: Jason Momoa, famous for his role as ‘Aquaman’ in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), is staying within the DC family but in a completely new role. The actor has been confirmed to portray Lobo, the notorious alien bounty hunter, in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on June 26, 2026. The announcement was made by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn on Instagram, where he shared an animated image of Momoa as Lobo and wrote, “Welcome to the #DCU Jason Momoa. @prideofgypsies #Lobo #Supergirl.”

This casting marks an exciting shift for Momoa, who will transition from his iconic portrayal of Aquaman to the chaotic antihero Lobo. The actor had previously expressed his desire to play Lobo, even hinting at the role during interviews promoting Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. His post on Instagram, where he referenced a past comment about hoping DC would cast him as Lobo, read, “They called,” confirming his new role.

Lobo, first introduced in Omega Men No. 3 (1983), is a blue-skinned, cigar-smoking antihero with superhuman strength, regenerative healing abilities, and a brutal demeanor. While filmmakers, including Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton, have previously tried to bring Lobo to the big screen, the project never materialized. Lobo did make his TV debut in the Krypton series, portrayed by Emmett J. Scanlan.

Momoa’s casting as Lobo signals a fresh direction for DC films under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Since taking over, Gunn and Safran have focused on creating continuity in the DC Universe while introducing new characters and narratives. Momoa’s shift from Aquaman to Lobo is one of the notable examples of this new approach, where actors from the previous regime can return in different roles.

Momoa’s tenure as Aquaman began with a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), followed by a larger role in Justice League (2017), and culminated in the global success of Aquaman (2018), which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. However, his final outing as the character in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom underperformed at the box office, grossing only $439 million.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will star Milly Alcock as the titular hero, is part of the first phase of DC’s revamped slate under Gunn and Safran’s leadership. It is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the DC Universe, with Lobo being a central part of this new era. Momoa has long expressed his passion for the character, stating, “I’ve always wanted to play him. Lobo is me. I am him.”
