Japan Coast Guard Ship ‘Itsukushima’ Docks In Chennai For Bilateral Engagements And Sea Exercise With India

Chennai: The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) ship ‘Itsukushima’ arrived at Chennai Port on Monday as part of its Global Ocean Voyage Training, kicking off a week-long visit that will include a series of professional and cultural exchanges with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

During its stay, the vessel will participate in ‘Exercise Jaa Mata’, a joint sea exercise with the Indian Coast Guard aimed at enhancing operational coordination and synergy at sea, officials said.

Furthermore, four officers from the ICG will embark on board ‘Itsukushima’ as Sea Riders, during its passage to Singapore, further strengthening camaraderie and professional exchange between the two forces,” the ICG stated.

The arrival of ‘Itsukushima’, commanded by Captain Naoki Mizoguchi, was marked by a warm ceremonial reception in traditional Indian style, underlining the close maritime partnership between India and Japan.

During its week-long port call in Chennai, the crew of ‘Itsukushima’ will participate in a series of professional and cultural activities, including official courtesy calls, reciprocal ship visits, and joint training and interactive sessions aimed at fostering mutual cooperation and understanding,” the ICG added.

As part of official engagements, the JCG delegation led by Vice Admiral Hroaki Kaosue will call on Paramesh Sivamani, Director General of the Indian Coast Guard. Bilateral discussions will also take place with Additional Director General Donny Michael, Commander of the Eastern Seaboard.

The visit includes various professional and cultural exchanges such as a joint yoga session and friendly sports activities, culminating on July 12.

A senior ICG official highlighted the significance of the visit:
The visit highlights the deep and enduring bond between the Indian Coast Guard and the Japan Coast Guard, reaffirming their strategic partnership in the vital Indo-Pacific region and enhancing interoperability between the two esteemed maritime forces.

The collaboration, rooted in the 2006 Memorandum of Cooperation, reflects a shared commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, aligning with India’s SAGAR vision and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.

This port call marks yet another significant milestone in advancing maritime diplomacy, enhancing operational synergy, deepening mutual trust and friendship between the two maritime agencies,” the official added.
