Jannik Sinner Into Wimbledon Fourth Round With Dominant Win Over Injured Martinez

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner enters second week at Wimbledon 2024 after crushing Pedro Martinez in straight sets, matches Open Era record for fewest games dropped

London [UK], July 6Jannik Sinner, the world number one, continued his dominant run at Wimbledon 2024, storming into the fourth round with a commanding 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Spain’s Pedro Martinez on Saturday. The Italian’s progress marks his 17th career appearance in the Round of 16 at a Grand Slam — a record for an Italian player.

According to the ATP’s official website, Sinner’s performance was clinical, aided in part by Martinez’s shoulder injury, which severely hampered the Spaniard’s serving ability. Despite the injury to his opponent, Sinner remained focused and ruthless from the baseline, putting on a masterclass in grass-court tennis.

“I’m very happy to be in the second week, but I think we all saw he was struggling with the shoulder,” Sinner said post-match. “He could not serve very well, and especially on this surface, if you cannot serve well, it is not easy to play. But huge credit to him for coming out. From my side, I tried to stay solid from the back of the court.”

Sinner was up 5-0 in the first set when Martinez called for medical attention for his right shoulder. The treatment, however, did little to alter the momentum as the Italian wrapped up the match in just over 90 minutes.

The 23-year-old has now dropped just 17 games in the tournament so far — equalling the Open Era record for fewest games conceded en route to the fourth round at Wimbledon, a milestone previously achieved by Jan Kodes.

Sinner’s service stats further underscore his dominance: he has yet to drop a single serve, winning all 37 of his service games and saving all eight break points he has faced.

This will be Sinner’s fourth consecutive fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon. With this win, he also surpasses Italian legend Nicola Pietrangeli’s record of 16 Grand Slam fourth-round appearances.

Saturday’s victory improved Sinner’s ATP Head-to-Head record against Martinez to 2-0. He now sets up a fourth-round clash with Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, who advanced after defeating his own third-round opponent 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(0).

Sinner, who already has three Grand Slam titles, is chasing his maiden Wimbledon crown. His best result at the All England Club remains his semifinal run in 2023, where he lost to Novak Djokovic.

As Sinner charges forward, the question looms large: Can he conquer Wimbledon and complete his Grand Slam quartet?
