Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor has found herself at the center of a social media storm after a video of her chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” at a Dahi Handi event in Mumbai went viral. The actress, who was attending a grand Janmashtami celebration in Ghatkopar on Saturday, has been brutally trolled for what netizens are calling an innocent but “dumb blunder.”
In the video, which is now being widely circulated, Janhvi is seen breaking the dahi handi matki with a coconut alongside BJP MLA Ram Kadam. As she successfully breaks the pot, she can be heard exclaiming, “Bharat Mata Ki Jai!” The crowd around her can be seen cheering, but the clip was soon picked up by social media users who found the cheer out of place for the religious festival.
Netizens were quick to point out the mistake. “I request all bollywood celebrities please don’t ruin hindu festival celebration if you are here for film promotion then kindly understand what festival it’s and understand it’s importance,” a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another user commented, “Rotated so hard between occasions/festivals this week that she forgot their names and reasons.”
The incident comes at a time when the actress is already dealing with a separate viral video from the same event. On Saturday night, a video of her being brutally mobbed by a sea of fans as she tried to exit the venue surfaced online. Janhvi looked visibly uncomfortable as she was pushed and jostled by the crowd.
Despite the online backlash, neither Janhvi Kapoor nor her team has released an official statement regarding the incidents. On the work front, the actress is gearing up for the release of her next film, titled Param Sundari, which features her opposite Sidharth Malhotra. The film is slated to hit theatres on August 29.
