Janhvi Kapoor Defends Indian Presence At Met Gala 2025, Celebrates Artisan Recognition

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 7: Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor has spoken out in defense of Indian representation at the Met Gala 2025, responding strongly to criticism on social media. Taking to the comments section of a post by fashion watchdog Diet Sabya, Kapoor emphasized the importance of global recognition for Indian artisans and designers.

“It was high time. Our artisans and designers are the best in the world. They deserve the spotlight on a global stage like the Met. As do our icons,” Janhvi wrote, asserting that Indian fashion deserves to be celebrated internationally.

Kapoor also addressed the negativity surrounding the increasing presence of Indian celebrities at the event, saying, “Shouldn’t we be happy we’re finally getting our due instead of salty about how seeing our own people on this platform is making it seem a little less aspirational? Might I say our garments were amongst the most spectacular. Amusing how we’re being almost classist towards ourselves—clearly colonial trauma hasn’t left us.”

She continued by highlighting the longstanding global influence of Indian craftsmanship, often uncredited: “For decades, the work of our artisans has been exported from our country and put on global platforms without credit. For decades, they have borrowed our fabrics, our embroidery, our textiles, our jewellery and presented it as a creation of which they are the rightful owners.”

Expressing pride in the growing recognition, Kapoor concluded, “I’m glad our people are finally getting the chance to represent so much of our work and heritage. If anything, the sense of pride I felt seeing our artists and garments at the Met made the whole affair seem even more magical.”

The Met Gala 2025 saw a notable Indian presence. Shah Rukh Khan made history as the first Indian male actor to attend the event, while Kiara Advani debuted her baby bump on the red carpet. Diljit Dosanjh paid tribute to his Sikh heritage and received widespread appreciation. Priyanka Chopra also returned with a show-stopping appearance.
