Jan Shepard, Veteran TV And Film Actress, Passes Away At 96

Jan Shepard, a beloved actress renowned for her roles in numerous TV Westerns and her collaborations with Elvis Presley, passed away on January 17 at the age of 96. She succumbed to pneumonia brought on by respiratory failure at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, her son, Hollywood prop master Brandon Boyle, confirmed. “She was a good one and will be dearly missed,” he said.

A Career Spanning Western Classics and Cult Films

Shepard is celebrated for her guest appearances on classic TV Westerns, including Rawhide, The Virginian, Gunsmoke, and over two dozen others. Her versatility and charm made her a familiar face in the genre.

In addition to her TV success, Shepard starred in two films alongside Elvis Presley:

  • “King Creole” (1958): She played Mimi, the sister of Presley’s Danny Fisher, in the Michael Curtiz-directed drama.
  • “Paradise, Hawaiian Style” (1966): Shepard portrayed the wife of Danny Kohana (James Shigeta), a partner in Presley’s character Rick Richards’ helicopter business.

Her film credits also include the cult classic “Attack of the Giant Leeches” (1959), a B-movie directed by Bernard L. Kowalski and produced by Gene and Roger Corman.

A TV Western Trailblazer

Shepard made her TV Western debut in 1954 on the anthology series Death Valley Days and went on to appear in iconic shows such as:

  • The Lone Ranger
  • The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp
  • Wanted: Dead or Alive
