Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], March 4: Jammu and Kashmir has experienced a significant surge in tourist arrivals over the past two years, according to the Tourism Department. The region saw a total of 2.12 crore visitors in 2023, with the number increasing to 2.36 crore in 2024, highlighting a growing interest in the area.
Among the influx, the territory also attracted a notable number of international tourists. In 2023, 55,337 international visitors explored the region, with the number rising to 65,452 in 2024.
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly MLA Mubarak Gul raised concerns about the region’s tourism potential and questioned the government’s handling of the influx. In response, the Tourism Department highlighted the substantial employment generated by the sector, though it admitted that no formal survey has been conducted to determine the exact number of jobs created. It was noted that the sector’s seasonal employment potential varies.
To promote tourism, the department explained that it receives funding under the “Advertisement & Publicity” budget. However, no formal financial incentive scheme is currently in place. The government has implemented several initiatives to create a supportive environment for entrepreneurial ventures within the tourism sector. Notably, tourism has been granted “Industry” status under the Jammu and Kashmir Industrial Policy-2021, enabling stakeholders to access various incentives provided by the Industries and Commerce Department.
The winter season has seen a noticeable rise in tourist arrivals, as many visitors flock to Jammu and Kashmir to enjoy its serene beauty and snowfall. Dal Lake in Srinagar, with its picturesque views, has remained a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists.
