Saint John’s [Antigua]: Cricket West Indies (CWI) has suspended Jamaica Scorpions captain John Campbell for four matches following a Level 3 charge related to his conduct during the Super50 Final against Barbados Pride on November 23.
The charge, issued by Match Referee Reon King, was for Campbell’s failure to attend the toss as instructed by the umpires, disrupting the match proceedings. In his letter to the Match Referee, Campbell expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging that they may have been seen as resistance to the umpires’ authority.
“I sincerely regret any disruption caused during the final and acknowledge that my actions may have been perceived as resistance to the match officials’ decision,” Campbell said. “It was never my intention to undermine their authority or bring the game into disrepute. I fully acknowledge the importance of maintaining the integrity of the game and the need for adherence to the rules and decisions of the officials.”
CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe confirmed the suspension and noted that Campbell’s admission and apology were key factors in deciding the sanction. The four-match ban is the minimum penalty for a Level 3 offence and will be served during the 2025 CG United Super50 Tournament.
Bascombe emphasized the importance of captains in setting an example of sportsmanship and respect for the game, adding that Campbell’s conduct should be a learning experience. “We trust that John will use this experience to continue contributing positively to West Indies cricket and serve as a role model moving forward,” Bascombe stated.
Additionally, CWI confirmed that no prize money will be awarded, and no match fees will be paid to either team involved in the final. The winner of the final would have received USD 100,000, with the runner-up set to receive USD 50,000.
Raymon Reifer, captain of the Barbados Pride, faces a similar charge but has yet to respond. If Reifer does not address the charges, the matter will proceed to the disciplinary committee. CWI’s focus is to ensure professionalism and accountability in all players, both on and off the field.
