EAM S Jaishankar Outlines Roadmap To Elevate India-Germany Strategic Partnership In Next 25 Years

As India and Germany commemorate 25 years of their strategic partnership, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar called for a fresh roadmap to elevate bilateral relations over the next quarter-century. Speaking at DGAP’s Centre for Geopolitics, Geoeconomics and Technology, Jaishankar stressed that the time is ripe to redefine and deepen cooperation across key sectors, as both nations adapt to a rapidly evolving global landscape.

“To be here early in the tenure of this government, so that we really lose no time in forging a pathway… after 25 years to look at the next 25 years,” Jaishankar said, underlining the importance of timely engagement.

Global Challenges, Shared Responsibility

In his address, Jaishankar acknowledged the pressing global challenges—from the semiconductor supply chain war and climate change, to the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and persistent poverty.

“The global picture is very challenging… The India-Germany and India-EU partnerships have become more salient and important than ever before,” he stated, adding that Germany’s role within the European Union makes it an invaluable partner for India.

Jaishankar’s Four Pillars to Upgrade India-Germany Ties

1. Defence and Security Cooperation
Calling for an end to past “conservatism,” Jaishankar said it’s time to revive and upgrade defence relations, which had once been more active.

“There is a realization in both countries that defence and security would be stronger through cooperation… we’re seeing this in Indo-Pacific naval visits, enhanced export licensing, and potential tech collaborations,” he said.

2. Talent and Mobility
Jaishankar stressed India’s demographic advantage and the scope for building a global workforce in collaboration with Germany, which faces demographic shortages.

“India’s demographic curve is in the right place to meet global talent demand.”

3. Technology and Digital AI
With growing global relevance of AI, quantum computing, and emerging tech, he proposed stronger India-Germany alignment in technological innovation and regulation.

4. Sustainability and Green Growth
Climate commitments and green transitions provide a vital opportunity for India and Germany to co-innovate in clean energy, carbon reduction, and sustainable development.

Trade Ties and the India-EU FTA

Jaishankar also reaffirmed optimism about deepening India-EU economic ties, stating that a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the EU would bolster bilateral trade and unlock new synergies in investment, manufacturing, and technology.

A Vision for a Multipolar, Stable World

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), EAM Jaishankar shared key highlights from the session:

“A good interaction @dgapev this evening. Spoke about India and Germany coming closer to promote global stability, security and prosperity. Discussed new opportunities in the bilateral relationship, as well as with the European Union. Preparing for a stronger partnership in a multipolar world.”

With this landmark anniversary as a springboard, both India and Germany are poised to deepen their cooperation—not just as bilateral partners, but as co-architects of a balanced, secure, and sustainable global order.
