New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday met Iran’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Mohammad Fathali, in New Delhi to discuss the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its broader implications.
Sharing details of the meeting, Jaishankar said the discussions focused on the evolving situation in the region and acknowledged Iran’s support for Indian nationals.

PM Modi Holds Talks With Iranian President
Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, discussing regional developments and bilateral ties.
During the call, Modi conveyed greetings on the occasions of Eid and Nowruz, expressing hope that the festive period would bring peace and stability to the region.
The Prime Minister also:
- Condemned attacks on critical infrastructure
- Highlighted risks to regional stability and global supply chains
- Emphasised the need to keep international shipping routes open
- Thanked Iran for ensuring the safety of Indian nationals
India Raises Concerns Over Energy and Trade Disruptions
Addressing the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi highlighted the serious economic impact of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has now continued for over three weeks.
He warned that the crisis is:
- Triggering a global energy crisis
- Disrupting India’s trade routes
- Affecting supply of essential commodities like petrol, diesel, gas, and fertilisers
Focus on Diplomacy and De-escalation
The Prime Minister emphasised India’s active diplomatic engagement, noting that he has personally spoken with leaders across West Asia, including:
- Iran
- Israel
- United States
- Gulf nations
India, he said, is working towards de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy, including discussions on reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
India’s Firm Stand on Maritime Security
Reiterating India’s position, PM Modi said:
- Attacks on commercial vessels are unacceptable
- Blocking international waterways violates global norms
- Protection of civilian lives and infrastructure is critical
“Any threat to human life in this war is against the interests of humanity,” he stated, stressing the need for a peaceful resolution at the earliest.
