New Delhi [India], June 10: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh launched a sharp attack on the Modi-led NDA government on Tuesday, accusing it of failing to uphold the dignity and safety of Indian citizens abroad, particularly in the United States.
His criticism comes in the wake of a viral video showing an Indian student handcuffed and pinned to the ground at a US airport. Ramesh also referred to former US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of having enforced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, allegedly without India’s involvement.
In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), the Congress MP wrote:
“The Modi government is continuously failing to protect the honour of India and Indians. For the first time in history, a foreign head of state announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in India’s absence. US President Trump is constantly claiming to enforce a ceasefire by pressuring India.”
He further stated that Indian students and citizens in the US have faced growing instances of mistreatment over the past year while Prime Minister Modi remains silent.
Demanding immediate diplomatic action, Ramesh urged the PM to raise the issue directly with the former US President:
“We demand that Prime Minister Modi should immediately talk to President Trump and appeal for intervention in the mistreatment and atrocities being committed against Indians in America.”
The Congress party has previously questioned the Modi government’s handling of foreign policy, especially in light of Trump’s self-declared role in halting India-Pakistan tensions. The ceasefire claims surfaced after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
