New Delhi [India]: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks during a recent podcast interview with Zerodha founder Nikhil Kamath, where the Prime Minister stated that human beings, including himself, are prone to making mistakes as he is “not a God.”
Reacting to the statement, Jairam Ramesh referred to a previous comment made by PM Modi in May 2024, where he claimed he was “convinced that God had sent him.” Ramesh posted on X, saying, “This is coming from a man who just eight months ago declared himself to be the self-proclaimed incarnation of God. This is clearly damage control.”

During the podcast, PM Modi shared his personal philosophy, emphasizing that mistakes are part of being human but should never stem from bad intentions.
“When I became the Chief Minister, I gave a speech in which I said, ‘I will not shy away from hard work,’ ‘I will not do anything for myself,’ and ‘I am human who can make mistakes, but I will never do anything wrong with bad intentions.’ This is my life’s mantra. Everyone makes mistakes, including me. After all, I am a human being, not some God,” PM Modi stated.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of idealism over rigid ideology, explaining that while politics is often driven by ideology, idealism is essential for progress. Citing examples, he said, “Gandhi and Savarkar had different paths, but their ideology was ‘freedom’.”
Controversial Statement from May 2024
Jairam Ramesh’s criticism stems from PM Modi’s earlier remarks during a May 2024 TV interview, where the Prime Minister spoke about his belief in divine purpose following his mother’s demise.
“When my mother was alive, I used to think that I was born biologically. However, after she died and when I think about these experiences, I am convinced that God has sent me. I have not got this energy from the biological body. God has given me this energy,” PM Modi said at the time.
The contrasting statements have sparked debates, with opposition leaders questioning the sincerity and consistency of PM Modi’s public declarations. Meanwhile, BJP supporters argue that the statements reflect humility and a larger philosophical outlook on leadership.
