Ravindra Jadeja Breaks Silence On ODI Snub For Australia Series: “They Spoke To Me, No Surprise”

Mumbai: Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has opened up about his non-selection for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, set to begin on October 19 in Perth. The left-arm spinner, who was part of India’s Champions Trophy-winning squad just eight months ago, said he was informed in advance about the selectors’ decision and harbours no resentment.

The absence of Jadeja, one of India’s most experienced all-rounders, raised several eyebrows when the squad was announced earlier this week. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that Jadeja remains “very much in the plans” for the 2027 ODI World Cup, and that the decision was based on team balance and conditions in Australia.

Speaking to reporters after Day 2 of the second Test against the West Indies, Jadeja revealed that the team management and selectors personally communicated their rationale behind leaving him out.

“It is not in my hands. I want to play, but at the end of the day, it’s all about the thinking of the captain, coach, selector and the management,” Jadeja said.
“They must have a reason behind not keeping me in the team for the Australia ODIs. They spoke to me, it is not like I was given a surprise. I didn’t find out about it at the time of the squad announcement,” he added.

The 36-year-old further emphasized that he is ready to contribute whenever the opportunity arises.

“The captain, coach and selectors spoke to me about their rationale. I am happy about it. Whenever I get the chance next, I will try to do what I can. There are numerous ODIs before the World Cup; if I get a chance and perform well, it would be beneficial for Indian cricket.”

‘Winning the World Cup is a Dream’

Jadeja also reflected on India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, where the team finished runners-up after losing to Australia in the final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

“To win the World Cup is a dream for everyone. Last time, we fell short at the final hurdle. Hopefully, the aim would be to go one step ahead,” he said.

The Saurashtra all-rounder, who has represented India in 204 ODIs, has scored 2,806 runs and picked up 231 wickets in the format.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing second Test against the West Indies, Jadeja starred with the ball, taking three wickets on the second day as the hosts ended at 140/4, still trailing by 378 runs.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled across South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, Jadeja reaffirmed his goal to remain in contention and make a significant impact in the tournament.
