Jackie Chan Returns In ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Alongside Ralph Macchio And Rising Star Ben Wang

Washington [US], June 1: Martial arts legend Jackie Chan reprises his iconic role as Mr. Han in the upcoming film Karate Kid: Legends, the latest installment in the globally beloved Karate Kid franchise.

The film, which also stars Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, follows a fresh storyline featuring Li Fong, a gifted kung fu student navigating a new school, an unlikely friendship, and an intense showdown with a local karate champion.

Jackie Chan’s Return and Physical Readiness at 71

Returning to the franchise he joined in 2010, Jackie Chan shared he didn’t need extra training for the new movie.

“I’ve been training every day for 64 years… I’m not like I used to be when I was 20 and could do a triple kick in the sky. Now, I do one kick — but it’s still me,” said the 71-year-old legend, as reported by Variety.

Despite his age, Chan performs all of his own stunts in Karate Kid: Legends, staying true to his decades-long commitment to authentic action.

New Lead Ben Wang Trains Intensely for Role of Li Fong

Ben Wang, who plays the central character Li Fong, underwent a rigorous training program to prepare for the film’s demanding fight choreography.

“I got a systematic ass-kicking,” joked Wang, adding that he trained five days a week with the stunt team and continued solo training on weekends.

The team had 90 days to prepare Wang to hold his own in scenes with Chan — an experience he described as intense but deeply rewarding.

Director Jonathan Entwistle on East vs. West Martial Arts Styles

Director Jonathan Entwistle, best known for The End of the F**ing World*, emphasized the film’s intention to bridge cultural martial arts styles:

“This film understands the fundamental difference between Hong Kong martial arts, which focuses on choreography and movement, and American martial arts, which is more about raw power and punches.”

Mentorship and Mutual Respect on Set

Chan mentored Wang during the shoot, encouraging him to perform his own stunts:

“The audience respects you more. When you use a double, you become lazy,” said Chan. He also added warmly, “He’s like my young Jackie Chan.”

Wang, humbled by the comparison, called Chan “nothing but helpful” and credited him for pushing him to deliver authentic performances.

Plot Summary: A Journey of Self-Discovery Through Martial Arts

In Karate Kid: Legends, Li Fong, a kung fu prodigy, finds himself adjusting to a new environment. Under the dual mentorship of Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso, Li navigates friendship, rivalry, and inner growth — culminating in a high-stakes battle that will test everything he’s learned.
