Lebanon: The health ministry in Lebanon said that an Israeli attack on a car in the Nabatiyeh district of southern Lebanon on Saturday killed one person and hurt another. The strike happened even though Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to a ceasefire in November 2024.
The Israeli military said that the dead man was Zayn al-Abidin Hussein Fatouni and that he was “a commander in the anti-tank unit of the Radwan Force Battalion” of Hezbollah. The military further said that Fatouni “was involved in efforts to reestablish Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon.”
The government said the fatality was caused by a “Israeli enemy strike on a car in Haruf, Nabatiyeh district.”
Over the past week, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have been worse, killing many people. Two attacks on cars on Friday killed a Hezbollah “logistics commander” and another member who was supposedly helping to bolster the group’s military might. Earlier, bombings on Thursday in southern and eastern Lebanon killed four individuals, including an elderly woman. Israel said the operations were aimed at weapons stockpiles, training camps, and military infrastructure.
A special UN envoy recently said that deadly Israeli strikes on vehicles, which commonly happen near civilian areas, could be war crimes, even though Israel says its operations were only aimed at Hezbollah operatives.
As part of the 2024 ceasefire, Israeli troops were supposed to leave southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah was supposed to take down military bases north of the Litani River. Israel still has troops at five important border crossings, and the Lebanese government has started making measures to disarm Hezbollah, which the movement and its allies are against.
The most recent attack shows that emotions are still high and the ceasefire agreement is being broken, which makes people worry that things will become worse along the Israel-Lebanon border.
