Israel on ‘high alert’ for possible US intervention in Iran After Trump’s ‘freedom’ remark

The Middle East is bracing for a potential escalation after US President Donald Trump issued his strongest signal yet of American intervention in the ongoing Iranian crisis. As nationwide anti-government protests enter their 14th day, Israel has reportedly gone on high alert, preparing for the possibility of US military action against the Islamic Republic.

Trump: “USA Stands Ready to Help”

In a post on Truth Social late Saturday, President Trump praised the “bravery” of the Iranian people and suggested that a historic shift is underway.

“Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!” Trump wrote.

The statement follows earlier warnings from the White House that the US will “hit Iran very hard where it hurts” if security forces continue to kill peaceful demonstrators. While Trump clarified on Friday that “help” does not necessarily mean “boots on the ground,” The New York Times reported that the President has already been briefed on a range of military strike options, including targets within Tehran.

The “Enemy of God” Charge

Inside Iran, the clerical leadership has responded with a chilling escalation of legal and physical force. On Saturday, Iran’s Attorney General, Mohammad Movahedi Azad, declared that any citizen participating in the protests—or even those “aiding” them—would be charged as an Mohareb (Enemy of God)

Under Iran’s Islamic law, this charge carries a mandatory death penalty. Azad instructed prosecutors to act “without leniency, compassion, or indulgence,” signaling an imminent wave of state-sanctioned executions to quell the unrest.

Mounting Casualties and Israel’s Stance

Despite a near-total internet blackout and severed phone lines, reports of mass casualties continue to filter out.

  • Death Toll: The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported at least 116 people killed since the unrest began on December 28. Other independent sources suggest the figure could exceed 200.
  • Israel’s High Alert: Sources in Jerusalem confirmed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed “intervention scenarios” over the weekend. While Israel has not expressed a desire to lead an intervention, its military is on high alert for Iranian retaliatory strikes on its borders or shipping lanes in the event of a US-led attack.

Iran’s Defiance: “Israel Will Be a Target”

Responding to Trump’s threats, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned on Sunday that if the US strikes, both American assets and Israel will become “legitimate targets.” Tehran continues to blame “foreign conspiracies” for the protests, which were sparked by the collapse of the rial (now trading at over 1.4 million to the USD) and a spiraling cost-of-living crisis.
