Israel Agrees To U.S.-Backed Temporary Ceasefire Proposal; Hamas Yet To Respond

Tel Aviv [Israel], May 30: Israel has reportedly accepted a new U.S.-backed proposal for a temporary ceasefire with Hamas, introduced by President Donald Trump’s Middle East Envoy, Steve Witkoff, according to multiple media sources.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed families of hostages that he is prepared to move forward with the ceasefire and hostage deal as proposed by Witkoff, Times of Israel reported, citing Axios. Israel’s acceptance was further confirmed by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who stated Thursday that Israel had “signed off” on the proposal, which has now been submitted to Hamas for consideration.

As per a report by CNN, an Israeli official disclosed that the proposal involves:

  • A 60-day truce
  • The release of 10 living hostages
  • The return of 18 deceased hostages

No specific details were shared about any talks surrounding a permanent ceasefire, a point Hamas has consistently emphasized as a non-negotiable demand. Israel has so far declined to commit to ending its military campaign permanently.

While Hamas has not officially accepted the proposal, it has voiced strong reservations. CNN cited Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, saying the framework originates from Israel and “does not respond to any of our people’s demands, foremost among which is stopping the war and famine.” He added that Hamas leadership is reviewing the proposal “with all national responsibility.”

A senior Israeli official told CNN that Hamas may agree to the proposal if the U.S. guarantees continued negotiations toward a permanent ceasefire and that fighting will not resume after the 60-day period. Hamas has also called for:

  • Humanitarian aid distribution through UN channels
  • The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to withdraw to positions held before March 2, prior to Israel’s renewed military operations

This development comes after months of stalled negotiations and continued conflict. The current ceasefire framework represents a renewed diplomatic push but remains uncertain amid ongoing disagreements between the two parties.
