Michael D. Higgins, the President of Ireland, has sharply condemned the recent rise in attacks on the Indian diaspora in Ireland. On Tuesday, the Irish leader thanked the Indian community for their “deep sense of gratitude.” He acknowledged their important and ongoing contributions to many areas of Irish society, such as medicine, nursing, cultural life, and commerce.
“Their presence, work, and culture have added to and enriched our shared life,” the statement said, emphasizing the good things the Indian community has done for us.
President Higgins’ comment comes after a number of attacks against Indian nationals that have been in the news recently. The most recent case was a bunch of kids attacking a six-year-old Indian girl. The President’s office said that these “despicable attacks” are “in stark contradiction to the values that we as a people hold dear.” The statement said that anyone who “draws someone into such behavior through manipulation or provocation” is wrong, and that these acts “diminish all of us.”
This formal censure comes after Ireland’s deputy prime minister, Simon Harris, visited with members of the Indian community on Monday and complimented them for their “positive contribution.” He also made it clear that he was against “despicable acts of violence and racism.”
Today, I met representatives of Ireland’s 🇮🇳 community.

I completely condemn the despicable acts of violence and racism that we have seen against some members of the 🇮🇳 community in recent weeks.

Because there had been more racist attacks in the preceding month, the Indian embassy in Dublin had to send out an advice and emergency helpline numbers for its citizens. At least three attacks on Indians were reported in July alone. They all followed the same pattern: a mob savagely attacked an Indian national.
