The Permanent Mission of Iran to the United Nations has formally lodged a strong protest with the UN Security Council (UNSC), denouncing the recent US-led airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities as a severe breach of international law and a threat to global peace and security.
In a letter addressed to the UNSC President, Tehran condemned the strikes—executed by both the United States and Israel—as “unlawful and reckless aggression” against Iran’s sovereign territory and peaceful nuclear programme.
“Such blatant acts of aggression and violations committed by a non-NPT party, the Israeli regime, and further perpetrated by the United States—the only Member State ever to have used nuclear weapons—constitute grave threats to the credibility of the global non-proliferation regime,” the letter read.
The Iranian delegation stressed that its nuclear facilities remain under constant verification by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and are intended solely for peaceful purposes. Iran accused the US and Israel of destabilising the global framework meant to regulate civilian nuclear energy under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The communication further stated: “Undoubtedly, the United States’ military aggression constitutes a manifest and flagrant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and Security Council Resolutions 487 (1981) and 2231 (2015). This aggression infringes on the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of Iran.”
Tehran urged the UNSC to convene an emergency session without delay, demanding condemnation of what it termed a “heinous crime” and full accountability for the aggressors. The letter warned of grave and far-reaching consequences for international peace and security if such actions go unchecked.
Iran also called out the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its “indifference and complicity,” accusing the watchdog of failing to prevent or speak out against the attack. However, the IAEA later confirmed that no increase in off-site radiation levels had been detected at the impacted facilities.
The Embassy of Iran in India also released a statement condemning the airstrikes and asserting Iran’s commitment to continuing its nuclear development under international law.
Oman’s Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern about the rising tensions and urged both sides to engage in immediate de-escalation efforts to prevent further regional instability.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the strikes as a “serious violation” of the NPT, UN Charter, and international legal norms, accusing the US of “lawless and criminal behaviour.”
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump defended the precision strikes, warning that if Iran did not agree to a peaceful resolution soon, “further action would follow.”
As the conflict continues to escalate, international attention is now focused on the UN Security Council’s response to Iran’s urgent appeal.
