Iran Mocks US Over Russian Oil Policy Shift Amid War, Says Washington Is ‘Now Begging the World’

Amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Iran has accused the United States of hypocrisy after Washington eased restrictions on Russian oil purchases. Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, claimed the US had earlier pressured countries like India to stop importing Russian crude but is now urging them to resume purchases due to the global oil crisis.

His remarks came after the administration of Donald Trump announced a 30-day waiver allowing countries to buy Russian oil cargoes despite existing sanctions. The decision was taken as oil prices surged following supply disruptions caused by the ongoing US–Israel–Iran war and the closure of the critical Strait of Hormuz.

Reacting to the move, Araghchi said the United States had spent months pressuring India to halt imports from Russia but had now reversed its stance. He also criticised European countries for supporting what he called an “illegal war” against Iran while expecting American backing in their standoff with Russia.

The policy shift comes as global crude prices crossed $100 per barrel, largely due to disruptions in shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit chokepoints.

Meanwhile, Iran’s ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, said Tehran would allow safe passage for Indian ships through the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasised that Iran considers India a friend and highlighted the shared interests between the two countries.

The developments highlight the growing geopolitical tension in the region as the war continues to disrupt energy markets and global trade routes.
